Creative Generation 2017 – now

Creative Generation is a platform to launch Cambodia’s new artistic talents by celebrating, mentoring and inspiring young creatives to cultivate a strong artistic vision and professional skills. It formalizes and deepens the work of Java Creative Café which runs a family of cafes and community art spaces and has been modelling cultural enterprise in Cambodia for nearly two decades.

I started the Creative Generation Award in 2017 to offer young artist mentorship, visibility and empowerment. It is built on many years of experience supporting and guiding artists through projects and their careers. It started at Java Creative Cafe Toul Kork with emerging curator MOENG Meta on my team for the first two years. Now relocated to Friends Futures Factory since 2019, the program operates in collaboration with our hosts.

They say “it takes a village to raise a child” – I would argue the same is true for artists. So, like almost everything I have done in the arts, Creative Generation and the artists are nurtured by community and enabled by the support of many mentors. As a result, it is a model incubator for creative leadership.

“I feel over the moon to win this creative generation 3 award because I can express my emotion by making artwork that uses my voice for the voiceless, bring hope for the one who lose hope, and use art with real humanitarian purpose, with love and peace.”

MECH Choulay, Creative Generation 3 Awardee
