Psar Kandal

Phnom Penh, Cambodia 2021

During the Covid-19 lockdowns, the Psar Kandal neighborhood was designated as an orange zone, limiting movement to within its boundaries. Inside the market, stalls were closed and aisles stood empty, while outside, vendors adapted by setting up along the surrounding streets in the open air. Access to food continued through these informal exchanges, sustaining many households. Yet, for those dependent on daily labor to afford meals, the restrictions exposed the fragile economics of urban survival. The photos were taken occasionally, whenever a moment of stillness, strain, or unexpected playfulness appeared within the confined life of the neighborhood.
